Bone Grafting & Sinus Lift
Bone grafting and sinus lift procedures rebuild or add bone in the jaw where it has thinned out, usually to prepare a strong, stable base for a dental implant. Over time, after tooth loss, gum disease, or long term denture wear, the jawbone can shrink both in height and width. When there is not enough bone to safely support an implant, a graft or sinus lift restores that foundation first.
Who needs this treatment
You may need bone grafting or a sinus lift if you:
- Have lost a tooth some time ago and the bone in that area has resorbed
- Are considering a dental implant but scans show insufficient bone height or width
- Need an implant in the upper back jaw, where the sinus often sits close to the bone
- Have bone loss from long standing gum disease
- Had a tooth removed and want to preserve the bone for a future implant
Not everyone needs grafting before an implant. The dentist will confirm this only after examining your mouth and reviewing imaging.
What happens at the clinic, visit by visit
First visit: examination and imaging
The dentist reviews your dental and medical history, examines the area, and usually takes an X-ray or CT scan to see the exact amount and quality of bone available. This is when a treatment plan is discussed, including whether a simple graft or a sinus lift is more suitable.
Procedure visit
Under local anaesthesia, the dentist places bone graft material in the area that needs building up, or in the case of a sinus lift, carefully lifts the sinus membrane and places graft material beneath it. The site is then closed, and in some cases a protective barrier membrane is used to support healing.
Healing period
The grafted bone needs time to integrate with your natural bone. This healing period varies from person to person and is monitored with follow-up visits and, if needed, repeat imaging.
Implant placement (if planned)
Once the graft has matured, the implant is placed, either as a separate visit or sometimes alongside the graft, depending on your specific case.
What changes the cost from case to case
Cost is not fixed because every case is different. Factors that affect it include how much bone needs to be added, the type of graft material used, whether a sinus lift is also needed, whether an implant is planned together with the graft, and how many sites need treatment. Aftercare
- Take prescribed medication as directed, including antibiotics if given, to reduce infection risk
- Avoid touching or disturbing the surgical site with your tongue or fingers
- Stick to soft, cool foods for the first few days
- Avoid blowing your nose forcefully or sneezing with your mouth closed after a sinus lift, as advised by the dentist
- Avoid smoking, as it slows healing significantly
- Attend all follow-up visits so healing can be checked properly

Is bone grafting painful?
The procedure itself is done under local anaesthesia, so you should not feel pain during it. Some swelling and mild discomfort for a few days afterward is normal and is managed with prescribed medication.
How long before I can get my implant after a bone graft?
It varies by case. Some grafts allow an implant to be placed at the same visit, while others need several months of healing first. The dentist will assess your bone and let you know what applies to you.
Will a sinus lift affect my breathing or sinuses long term?
No. A sinus lift is a well established procedure that gently raises the sinus floor to create room for bone. It does not affect normal sinus function once healed.
What if I have very little bone left?
