Wisdom Tooth Removal Recovery: What to Expect Day by Day
If you have a wisdom tooth surgery date booked, knowing what the next week looks like can make planning time off much easier. Recovery varies a little from person to person, but most patients in Gurugram follow a fairly predictable pattern of swelling, stiffness, and gradual improvement. Here is a realistic day-by-day guide.
Day 1: Rest and Control Bleeding
The first few hours after surgery are about letting the blood clot form properly in the socket. This clot protects the bone underneath and is essential for healing.
- Bite gently on the gauze pad for 30 to 45 minutes, replacing it if needed
- Avoid rinsing, spitting forcefully, or using a straw for the rest of the day
- Stick to cold, soft foods like yoghurt, mashed potatoes, or a lukewarm soup
- Apply a cold pack to the outside of your cheek in short bursts to reduce early swelling
- Take any prescribed medication as directed, even if you feel fine
Day 2 to 3: Peak Swelling and Stiffness
Swelling usually peaks around 48 hours after surgery, not immediately after. This surprises many patients who expect day 1 to be the worst. Jaw stiffness, sometimes called lockjaw, is also common during this window, especially if a lower wisdom tooth was removed.
- Continue cold packs through day 2, then switch to gentle warmth from day 3 if stiffness persists
- Eat soft foods such as khichdi, dal, scrambled eggs, or soft idli
- Avoid hot, spicy, or crunchy food that could irritate the site
- Start gentle saltwater rinses from the morning after surgery, done very softly
- Rest with your head slightly elevated to help reduce swelling
Day 4 to 5: Gradual Improvement
By now, most people notice swelling starting to settle and jaw movement improving. Some bruising on the cheek or jawline is normal and will fade over the coming days.
- You can usually return to light work or desk jobs if you feel up to it
- Gently reintroduce semi-soft foods like soft rice, well-cooked vegetables, and paneer
- Continue saltwater rinses after meals
- Jaw stretching exercises, if advised, can help with lingering stiffness
Day 6 to 10: Stitches and Final Healing
If dissolvable stitches were used, they typically loosen or fall out on their own during this period. The socket continues to close over from the inside, though it may take several weeks for the bone underneath to fully heal.
| Day | What is normal |
|---|---|
| 1 | Mild bleeding, numbness wearing off, some discomfort |
| 2 to 3 | Peak swelling, jaw stiffness, bruising may appear |
| 4 to 5 | Swelling reduces, easier to open mouth, soft diet okay |
| 6 to 10 | Stitches dissolve, socket closing, near-normal eating |
Diet Progression Overview
- Day 1: Cold, liquid or very soft food only
- Day 2 to 3: Lukewarm soft food, nothing hot or spicy
- Day 4 to 7: Semi-soft food, chewing carefully on the other side
- Week 2 onward: Gradual return to normal diet as comfort allows

Frequently asked questions
How many days off work should I plan for wisdom tooth surgery?
Most people take 2 to 3 days off for a straightforward case. If your job involves heavy physical work or a lot of talking, consider 4 to 5 days, especially if more than one tooth was removed or the removal was more involved.
Is it normal for jaw stiffness to last more than a week?
Mild stiffness can linger for 7 to 10 days, particularly if the lower jaw was involved. If it is getting worse rather than better after day 5, or you cannot open your mouth at all, call the clinic.
When can I go back to brushing normally?
You can gently brush other teeth from day one, avoiding the surgical area. After 3 to 4 days, you can start lightly cleaning near the site with a soft brush, being careful around any stitches.
What if my stitches fall out early?
Dissolvable stitches often loosen or fall out on their own within 7 to 10 days, which is normal. If this happens very early with bleeding or pain, call us so we can check the socket.
