Gum Disease: Causes, Warning Signs, Stages, and Treatment in Gurugram

Gum Disease: Causes, Warning Signs, Stages, and Treatment in Gurugram

Bleeding gums are often brushed off as a minor issue, something caused by a hard toothbrush or brushing too fast. Sometimes that is exactly what it is. But persistent bleeding, redness, or swelling is usually your gums telling you something more is going on. Gum disease is one of the most common oral health problems we see in our Gurugram clinic, and the good news is that it is largely preventable and, in its early stage, fully reversible.

What Causes Gum Disease

Gum disease begins with plaque, a soft, sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth every day. If plaque is not removed through regular brushing and flossing, it hardens into tartar (calculus) within a few days. Tartar cannot be brushed away and irritates the gums, leading to inflammation.

Warning Signs to Watch For

Gum disease often develops quietly, without pain, which is why many patients only notice it once it has progressed. Common signs include:

The Stages of Gum Disease

Gingivitis

This is the earliest and mildest stage. The gums become red, swollen, and may bleed easily, but the underlying bone and fibres holding the teeth in place are not yet affected. Gingivitis is completely reversible with professional cleaning and good daily hygiene.

Early to Moderate Periodontitis

If gingivitis is left untreated, the inflammation spreads below the gum line. Pockets begin to form between the teeth and gums, and the body starts to lose some of the bone and tissue that anchor the teeth. This stage is not fully reversible, but it can be controlled and stopped from getting worse.

Advanced Periodontitis

At this stage, significant bone loss has occurred. Teeth may become loose, shift position, or feel painful when chewing. Without treatment, tooth loss becomes a real possibility. Advanced periodontitis needs more intensive management to save the affected teeth.

Modern Treatment Options in Gurugram

Treatment depends on how far the disease has progressed. At our Sector 48 clinic, we assess gum health with a careful examination and, when needed, digital X-rays to check the bone level before recommending a plan.

Typical Costs in Gurugram

Gum disease treatment costs vary depending on severity and the number of teeth involved. As a general guide for Gurugram, a routine scaling and cleaning falls in a typical range of ₹1,500 to ₹4,000, while deep cleaning or root planing per quadrant typically ranges from ₹2,500 to ₹6,000. Surgical procedures cost more and depend on complexity. Your dentist can give you an accurate estimate only after an examination.

Prevention Matters Most

Brushing twice daily, flossing once a day, and visiting your dentist every six months remain the most effective ways to prevent gum disease. If you smoke, quitting significantly improves gum health and healing. Managing conditions like diabetes also plays an important role in keeping your gums strong.

Frequently asked questions

Is bleeding while brushing always a sign of gum disease?

Not always, but it is the most common early warning sign. Occasional light bleeding from a hard brush or new floss habit may settle in a few days. If bleeding continues for more than a week, it is worth getting your gums checked.

Can gingivitis be reversed completely?

Yes. Gingivitis affects only the gums and has not damaged the bone yet. With professional cleaning and consistent home care, gums usually return to a healthy pink colour within two to four weeks.

Once periodontitis has caused bone loss, can that bone come back?

Lost bone does not regrow on its own, but treatments like deep cleaning, and in some cases regenerative procedures, can stop further loss and help stabilise the teeth.

How often should I get a dental cleaning to prevent gum disease?

Most patients do well with a professional cleaning every six months. If you have a history of gum disease, smoke, or have diabetes, your dentist may suggest cleanings every three to four months.
